About the talk

How can science educators meaningfully engage with Indigenization in ways that are collaborative, sustained, and impactful?

In this session, Dr. Welsh will explore approaches for beginning and nurturing engagement with Goal 4: Indigenizing Our Curriculum from UBC’s Indigenous Strategic Plan. Drawing on practical examples from across the Faculty of Science at UBC Vancouver, she will highlight how curricula and teaching practices are being re‑envisioned, as well as the opportunities, challenges and tensions that emerge in this work.

Grounded in both personal and professional experience as a non‑Indigenous STEM educator, Dr. Welsh will reflect on her learning journey and the generosity, care and guidance she has received from Indigenous and non‑Indigenous colleagues and mentors. This talk invites educators to consider how relationships, humility, and shared responsibility are central to building and sustaining momentum toward meaningful change.
