November 25, 2022 at 12:30 pm - 4:30 pm

The Centre for Heart, Lung and Vascular Health is celebrating 10 years of research and graduate student training. Students, faculty and staff are welcome to attend talks by Drs. Vaughan Macefield and Anthony Bain. Following the talks, students will give short presentations on research. The afternoon itinerary is as follows:

12:30 pm – 1:30 pm

Keynote Title: Invasive and non-invasive explorations of human cardiovascular and cardiorespiratory control by the autonomic nervous system

Speaker biography: Professor Vaughan Macefield is Head of the Human Autonomic Neurophysiology Lab at the Baker Heart and Diabetes Institute in Melbourne, Australia. He specializes in recording from single nerve fibres via microelectrodes inserted into the peripheral nerves of awake human participants, and is best known for developing the methodology for recording the firing properties of single, type-identified, sympathetic neurons supplying muscle and skin. Recently, he made the first microelectrode recordings from the human vagus nerve.

1:45 pm – 2:15 pm

Title: Path in academia after graduating from the Centre

Speaker bio: Dr. Bain is an Associate Professor at the University of Windsor, in the faculty of Human Kinetics and Integrative Biology. He received his PhD at the Centre for Heart Lung and Vascular Health in 2016, under the supervision of Prof. Philip Ainslie. He completed his post-doctoral studies at the University of Colorado, Boulder, and began his faculty post in 2018. Dr. Bain’s research focus is on the integrative properties of vascular function. He holds National funding through NSERC and is funded through the WeSpark Health Institute, where he is a core research member. In the fall of 2022, Dr. Bain was nominated for the Early Career Research Award at the University of Windsor.

2:15 pm – 4:30 pm
