Community of Practice: Innovative Teaching Techniques and Tools

March 10 at 11:30 am - 12:20 pm

For this session, staff members from Constellation will demo the lightboard that is now located in SCI 331 and available for booking. Come try out the lightboard and learn about best practices and teaching applications!

A lightboard is an innovative teaching and presentation tool that allows instructors to face their audience (or a camera) while writing or drawing on a transparent, illuminated glass board. The technology creates a visually striking “floating text” effect, particularly useful for visually oriented presentations involving graphics, diagrams, equations, or annotations. Meanwhile, a video camera records the instructor through the lightboard before flipping the image horizontally and saving it to a USB drive.

The Constellations lightboard has been designed to focus on ease of use to enable DIY media creation. Instructors can use the simplified controller to start/stop recordings, change camera frames, and show an additional laptop feed. First-time users will be provided an orientation covering how to get access to the Lightboard Studio, properly use the technology in the space, prepare their content for recording, and effectively integrate the resulting media into a course.

Watch the video produced by UBC Studios about the lightboard (in its previous location) featuring Peyman Yousefi, former CoP co-facilitator, demonstrating its use and response from students.
