Creative Writing Workshop at Woodhaven

July 19 at 10:00 am - 12:30 pm

Woodhaven eco centre building

The Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies is excited to announce Sneha Subramanian Kanta as the 2025 Woodhaven Artist in Residence. Born in Mumbai, Sneha Subramanian Kanta is an academician with over fifteen years of international teaching experience residing in the Greater Toronto region. She is the author of five chapbooks including ‘AncestralWing’ and ‘Ghost Tracks’.

During her residence, Sneha Subramanian Kanta will offer a free creative writing workshop for writers with all levels of experience. Participants will begin with a brief discussion of her academic research in postcolonial ecocriticism and the ways in which Sneha outlines those in her work (10 minutes). Participants will read work by several writers, including Natalie Diaz, Alice Oswald, Jessica J. Lee, Robert Macfarland and Ocean Vuong. Participants will read several poems, fiction pieces and creative non-fiction. An email with a handout will be provided to all participants which they may choose to print prior to the workshop. Everyone will be provided with multiple writing prompts. Participants may expect to leave with several drafts. Fifteen minutes will be for participant questions about publishing, submitting to literary journals, and establishing a career in writing.

The workshop will create modes of new thought through imaginative literature. When we turn our attention to ecology, what do we gather? In the Anthropocene, we are faced with a climate crisis and negative impacts on the environment. How can we bring attention to our immediate landscapes? In what way does writing about the natural world inform our writing practice? We will frame answers to these questions through ecopoetics. Participants are encouraged to bring a keen sense of awareness to the natural world. You can bring one or more of these to the workshop: a flower, leaf, stem or any natural object to class.

This workshop is free and open to all. Registration is required and limited to 20 spaces.

Copies of her limited edition chapbook, AncestralWing, will be available for $18.
