EEGS Seminar Series

January 24 at 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

The Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science presents the “Does Human-Caused Climate Change Threaten the Existence of Whistler Blackcomb Ski Resort?” seminar, as part of the Earth, Environmental and Geographic Sciences (EEGS) Seminar Series.

About the talk

Whistler Blackcomb Ski Resort is located approximately 135 kilometres north of Vancouver International Airport in Whistler, British Columbia. This premier winter sports destination attracts over 2 million visitors during the ski season.

Over the past two decades, the resort has experienced notable weather challenges, particularly during the 2014/15 and 2023/24 ski seasons, which were marked by unfavourable conditions. Historical climate data indicates a significant warming trend over the past century, with decreasing snowfall and increasing rainfall. Results from the climate model simulations for the variables temperature, snowfall, and rainfall suggest the weather experienced in the winter of 2014/15 and 2023/24 may become the norm well before the end of the century.
