Electron Channeling Contrast Imaging: Principles and Opportunities for Earth Sciences and Materials Engineering

August 11 at 10:00 am - 10:30 am

Free

The Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science presents this talk as part of the Earth and Environmental Sciences Seminar Series.

About the Talk

Electron Channelling Contrast Imaging (ECCI) is a scanning electron microscopy-based technique that enables direct imaging of crystallographic defects in bulk crystalline materials. Unlike conventional transmission electron microscopy approaches, ECCI allows defects to be investigated in relatively large samples with minimal preparation, making it particularly valuable for the study of both natural and engineered materials.

This interactive seminar will introduce the principles of electron channelling, explain how Electron Channelling Patterns (ECPs) are used to achieve channelling conditions and demonstrate how ECCI can be applied to image crystallographic defects such as dislocations and stacking faults.

Attendees will also receive a practical overview of ECCI using the newly acquired state-of-the-art TESCAN CLARA scanning electron microscope at the FiLTER laboratory. The presentation will cover pattern indexing workflows using AstroECP and techniques for navigating to specific channelling conditions.
