First Day of Class

August 31, 2022 at 10:00 am - 11:30 am

Free

UBCO | CTL Workshop

This workshop can serve as an elective for the Teaching Development Program (TDP).

Modality: Multi-access
Location: SCI 331 & Zoom

Facilitator:  Barbara Komlos and UBCO Faculty Members

The UBC Okanagan Centre for Teaching and Learning invites you to join us for a series of multi-access workshops from August 15th to the 31st. You have the choice of joining us either in person or online via Zoom.

What would you like students to take away from your first meeting with them? Beyond introducing the syllabus, the first day of class is an opportunity to connect with students, invite engagement, and generate excitement around your course. Students will expect to hear about course logistics, materials, and assignments, but they would also appreciate insights into how you plan on guiding their learning and how the course connects to their backgrounds and interests. In this 90-minute workshop, faculty from across campus will share their strategies around four principles for planning an impactful first day:

  • Sparking curiosity
  • Fostering community
  • Activating learning
  • Exploring expectations

All UBCO instructors are invited to register.
