Getting Started with Writing over the December Break

December 1, 2020 at 11:00 am - 3:00 pm

Do you want to finish a writing project, but find it difficult to get motivated? Are you hoping to turn a term-paper into a publication, or do you want to start from scratch? Join our half-day online workshop to get motivated and prepared to write! We will facilitate presentations and discussions on motivating yourself to write, setting writing goals, and converting your paper into a journal article. We will also spend time writing (online) together.

Suitable for graduate students, post-doctoral fellows, and faculty in all disciplines.

We encourage you to have your working draft of your writing project, or ideas/notes for your project available for you to begin writing. This workshop will be a combination of interactive group discussion, individual writing time, and presentations facilitated by the Centre for Scholarly Communication.

Schedule (in Pacific Time):

11:00 am: Goal Setting for Writing Motivation

  • Join to discuss your own writing strategies, learn new strategies, and prepare goals for your writing time over the break.

12:00 pm: Converting your Paper into a Journal Article

  • Learn how to turn your conference presentation or class paper into a career-advancing publication! We will discuss common revision areas, such as the literature review, introduction, discussion, and conclusion, offer editing tips, and address the shift to a professional audience and publication context.

1:00 pm: Online Writing Community

  • Write with us! We will facilitate short opening and closing discussions, and plenty of time to write online, in the style of the Pomodoro technique.
