IdeaFest: What kind of governor is Big Tech?

October 31 at 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

IdeaFest is a dynamic series of events designed to ignite creativity and drive innovation. This engaging forum brings together students, faculty and industry leaders to explore groundbreaking ideas and advancements. Through thought-provoking talks, hands-on workshops and collaborative discussions, participants dive into emerging trends and discoveries, fostering curiosity and interdisciplinary connections.

More than just a lecture series, IdeaFest offers an interactive experience with thought leaders, encouraging creative problem-solving and visionary thinking.

As part of the festival, Dr. Wendy Wong from UBC Okanagan’s Irving K. Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, will present What kind of governor is Big Tech? This session will explore how we can use theories of power to understand how Big Tech’s bigness comes from a business model based on data-collecting platforms, network effects and control over the means of computation.
