On National Indigenous Peoples Day, Naim Cardinal, educational facilitator with UBCO’s Indigenous Programs and Services team, will provide a presentation about Indigenous Influences in the game of hockey. Naim has been researching and studying Indigenous hockey history for almost a decade and has become a passion for him.

The Indigenous Influences in Hockey presentation will discuss a number of Indigenous hockey players who have made it to the highest levels of hockey—the NHL—and will celebrate their careers and impacts on the game of hockey. The presentation will share some of the barriers the players had to overcome during their lives to make it as far as they did in their hockey careers but will also note their positive impacts on Indigenous communities outside of hockey.

Additionally, Naim will have his hockey card collection available for viewing which consists of every Indigenous player who has played in the NHL and has a hockey card made. At the moment, there are nearly 100 different players of Indigenous descent in Naim’s hockey card collection.
