Metaphors of Beauty and Power in the Okanagan: a presentation and photo essay by Mari Noble
July 10 at 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Free
Mari Noble’s photo essay project “Metaphors of Beauty and Power in the Okanagan” will draw on theories found in the philosophy of language, environmental ethics, cognitive psychology, as well as Indigenous narratives and traditions specific to the Okanagan.
This photo essay is structured using the four classical elements: fire, water, air, and earth, along with time and space. The central question of this essay is: What role do metaphors play in the transfer of knowledge, and is there something unique about metaphors that cannot easily be replicated by an algorithm?
All are welcome to attend, and refreshments will be provided.
Mari Noble is completing a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy at UBC Okanagan. This project was awarded funding through the Sharron Simpson Family Community Engagement Endowment Fund.
