No Speech, No Gesture: Implications for Theories on Gesture-Speech Relationship

May 13, 2025 at 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm

For several centuries, scholars have primarily studied the oral aspects of speech. In other words, speech comes out of our mouths. Visiting lecturer Dr. Maria  Graziano will argue that our hands can also be just as expressive as our voice through meaningful hand movements called gestures.

Through her work across multiple languages, including Italian and Swedish, she will show that speech is integrally tied to gestures in that gestures often co-occur with speech and convey similar and complementary meaning.

Dr. Graziano is an expert on gestures in communication and is visiting from the University of Lund in Sweden.

Join us for this engaging lecture on May 13. No registration is required. Everyone is welcome to attend.
