Sleep: A Key to Health

About this Session:
Good sleep is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle and a key component for optimum daytime functioning and well being. This lecture will review how sleep affects health, mood and daytime functioning including effects on metabolism and obesity and the impact on health conditions like heart disease and diabetes. We will outline the common sleep disorders along with how these conditions are diagnosed and treated. We will discuss how to optimize sleep quality and quantity as well as how to manage insomnia.

Dr. Ron Cridland, M.D., C.C.F.P., Diplomate, American Board of Sleep Medicine
Dr. Cridland graduated from the University of Toronto medical school in 1982, and was certified with the Canadian College of Family Physicians in 1984. After a number of years of family practice with an emphasis on health promotion, he became interested in sleep medicine. He was certified with the American Board of Sleep Medicine in 1999. He is the medical director of the Kelowna Sleep Clinic and Vernon Sleep Clinic. He has a particular interest in the non-pharmacological management of insomnia.
