Story Poles: Artist Talk with Les Louis

Please join us for an artist talk with Syilx artist Les Louis on Wednesday, September 16, at 2 pm.

Louis will talk about his public art piece on campus, the Story Poles / sn̓ilíʔtn. Each pole in the sculpture represents the seven bands within the Okanagan Nation Alliance. The piece has pictographs carved into each pole, telling the story of the origin of the bands. This work serves as a preservation of traditional knowledge and a symbol of cultural renewal.

Story Poles / sn̓ilíʔtn, is a permanent installation created by Syilx artist Les Louis that was co-funded by the Okanagan Nation Alliance and UBC. It was erected in September 2016 in the campus central courtyard to commemorate the 10-year anniversary of UBC Okanagan and the UBC Centennial.

Event details:

• 2 pm | Meet at the Story Poles in the central courtyard, UBC Okanagan
• 2-2:15 pm | Welcome and introduction by Les Louis
• 2:15-2:30 pm | Walk to CCS 224 in the Creative and Critical Studies building
• 2:30-3:15 pm | Presentation by Les Louis on his art practice
• 3:15-3:30 pm | Q&A

Light refreshments will be served after the presentation. This event is free and open to all. We ask that you register to give us an idea about numbers.

This event is part of the UBC Okanagan Homecoming celebrations, and is organized by the UBC Okanagan Gallery with the support of the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies.
