UBC Okanagan Gallery, in collaboration with the Morris and Helen Belkin Gallery, is excited to celebrate the opening of our latest exhibition The Structure of Smoke on Thursday, May 21 beginning at 4:00PM. Co-curated by Melanie O’Brian and Tania Willard, The Structure of Smoke explores artworks that problematize the poetic, structural and political aspects of fire.
The Structure of Smoke opens to the public on Thursday, May 21st with an opening reception scheduled for 4:00-6:00PM. The reception will feature a performance by Vancouver based sound artists Woojae Kim and Adrian Avendaño beginning at 4:30 pm after opening remarks. Woojae Kim and Adrian Avendaño will perform the works in I hear a silent dissonance (2024) included in the exhibition. The work, I Hear A Silent Dissonance, formed in response to Kim’s visit to the 2023 McDougall Creek fire, are inspired by Korean percussion instruments and ceremonies —known as 풀이 (Pul-i), or “untangling”, the resonance of drums and reference to ritual aim to foster empathy and repair.
This event is free to attend and open to the public. Light refreshments and wine will be served.
