
UBCO Classroom Wellbeing and Accessibility Awards

The Classroom Wellbeing and Accessibility Awards (formerly the Golden Apples Awards) is a highly anticipated award ceremony that is student-led and supported by Campus Wellness and the Disability Resource Centre. The awards serve as a beacon of recognition, for faculty members and staff who have significantly enhanced students’ health and overall wellbeing, or supported accessible learning environments and experiences. Awards that will be presented include the Dr. Claire Budgen Golden Apple Award and the I am Accessible Award.
How do students nominate faculty and/or staff for these awards?
Students have until February 28th to nominate a faculty or staff member who has positively impacted your wellbeing and academic journey at UBCO. Whether through their support, dedication, or innovative approaches, we want to hear about those who have made a difference in your experience this year! Nominate someone here.

The Dr. Claire Budgen Golden Apple Award was created to acknowledge faculty members making outstanding contributions to wellbeing in the academic environment. Award categories are based on the resource Teaching Practices that Promote Wellbeing:
- Creating a safe classroom environment
- Openly discuss wellbeing related topics
- Recognize that students have lives outside of academics
- Fostering instructor-student relationships
- Fostering peer-to-peer relationships
- Helping students find value in the subject matter
- Helping students find value in the learning process
- Supporting learning outside the classroom
- Structuring course effectively
- Delivering course effectively
The I Am Accessible Award is intended to recognize and celebrate UBCO faculty and staff members who exemplify the qualities of an inclusive educational institution. View the Award Criteria.
- Presented to a Faculty member who epitomized inclusive education by demonstrating equitable access to learning materials and resources used in the classroom/lab, a positive attitude towards diverse learning needs, and a willingness to be flexible while maintaining academic standards.
- Presented to a Staff member who was exceptional in making student(s) feel welcomed and included at UBCO.
