Webinar Workshop on Graduate Supervision in the COVID-19 Context

May 26, 2020 at 9:30 am - 11:30 am

Open to all faculty at UBCV and UBCO.

Led by Theresa Rogers, Associate Dean, Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies, UBCV and Jennifer Jakobi, Dean Pro Tem, College of Graduate Studies, UBCO.

In this webinar, we will each briefly share some key principles and suggestions for supervising graduate students in these uncertain times. Using an interactive workshop format, we will then lead conversations addressing challenges and innovations for the academic success of graduate students.

Participants will have space to ask questions of the group and share innovative solutions they’ve been using with their own graduate students. Ideas shared within this workshop will be collated into a best practices guide that we will share with the broader faculty community.

Topics will include:

  • Drawing on principles of excellent supervision and mentoring,
  • Fostering communication and academic progress in the current context,
  • Revisiting mutual expectations,
  • Maintaining a sense of  community, and
  • Negotiating the changing situation in the larger university context.

We will share current resources related to graduate student finances, academic concessions, and international students. Our workshop partners include Rehana Bacchus on ways to support student wellbeing and Lisa Shearer on adapting graduate thesis approaches from an Ethics lens.
