DESCRIPTION:Olivia Helena Margoto\, supervised by Drs. Abbas Milani & Yasmine Abdin\, will defend their dissertation titled “Data-Driven Processing–Property–Defect Relationships in the Forming of Flax Fibre Composite Reinforcements” in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering. \nAn abstract for Olivia Helena Margoto’s dissertation is included below. \nExaminations are open to all members of the campus community as well as the general public. This examination will be offered in hybrid format.  Registration is not required to attend in person; however\, please email abbas.milani@ubc.ca to receive the Zoom link for this exam. \nAbstract\nNatural Fibre-Reinforced Composites (NFRCs) already offer lightweight and sustainable alternatives for several industrial applications including those in automotive sector. However\, similar to synthetic composite options\, forming-induced defects such as wrinkles can reduce targeted performance of NFRCs. Predicting these defects is particularly challenging for natural fibre woven reinforcements due to the inherent variability in fibre geometry and resulting fabric properties. \nThis study applies a data-driven approach to predict wrinkle formation in flax (2×2 twill as well as biaxial non-crimp) and glass (as synthetic benchmark) twill weave reinforcements. The fabrics’ shear\, bending\, tensile\, and friction behaviors were experimentally characterised to capture forming-relevant mechanical properties. The fabrics were subsequently formed in multi-layer configurations over a tetrahedron and square tools\, followed by 3D scanning to quantify wrinkle distributions for each material alternative. Unsupervised data-driven methods were next used to assist multivariate analysis and identification of potential post-forming processing–property–defect relationships. Two types of descriptors were calculated from forming experiments to quantify wrinkle severity: i. structural response metrics\, representing Surface Distortion (SD)\, Volume Distortion (VD)\, a Wrinkle Index (WI)\, and Compliance (CP); and ii. image texture descriptors\, where post-forming surface deformations were transformed into grayscale maps from which Haralick texture features\, including contrast\, dissimilarity\, energy\, and homogeneity\, were extracted. Combined with the fabric design parameters such as weave type\, forming orientation\, number of layers\, grammage\, and thickness\, those descriptors were used to train i. Linear Regression (LR)\, ii. Partial Least Squares (PLS) regression\, and iii. Artificial Neural Network (ANN) models. The models were evaluated using both k-fold and Monte Carlo cross-validation strategies in their ability to predict the described wrinkle severity descriptors. Results clearly showed that flax twill reinforcements exhibited the best forming performance\, characterised by the lowest overall occurrence of out-of-plane forming-induced defects\, followed by the biaxial fabrics\, while the glass twill weave exhibited the poorest performance under both the tetrahedron and the square forming tools. For the latter geometry\, a 45° fabric orientation was found to be optimal for all woven reinforcements\, as it maximised in-plane shear accommodation and minimised wrinkle formation. This effect was most pronounced for the flax twill with 367 gsm areal weight\, which demonstrated the best overall formability due to its favourable balance between bending stiffness and shear compliance. In contrast\, the biaxial non-crimp fabric exhibited limited orientation sensitivity\, as their stitched architecture restricted yarn rotation and shear deformation. Linear models\, LR and PLS\, exhibited similar performance\, accurately predicting defect severity through SD\, dissimilarity\, and homogeneity\, with R2 ~ 0.70. The ANN models were able to capture nonlinear relationships between the input material properties and the wrinkle severity descriptors\, achieving a superior performance R2 ~ 0.90 for SD\, VD\, and dissimilarity. In addition to achieving the best and most consistent predictive performance across all descriptors and models\, the dissimilarity feature effectively described both defect severity and fabric architecture effects\, with lower values for glass twill reinforcements and higher values for the flax non-crimp fabric reinforcement. Results also revealed that the effective bending stiffness\, shear stiffness\, and fabric orientation are among the most influential material factors in forming-induced defect severity\, as confirmed by SHAP analysis. Overall\, the findings demonstrated that integrating structural/image-texture descriptors with process parameters and mechanical properties provide a promising machine-learning framework for rapidly predicting the forming quality of NFRCs.

SUMMARY:Kalevala in Context: Creative & Critical
DESCRIPTION:Join us in the AMP Lab (FIP 251) for Kalevala in Context: Creative & Critical\, a series of talks by visiting artist Olli Aarni and AMP Lab director Karis Shearer\, with an introduction by Jodey Castricano and respondents Sean Lawrence and Francisco Peña. \nOlli Aarni will give a talk on “The Weep of Trees” by Band of Weeds\, a four-channel work of sound art by the Band of Weeds based on the poem about a weeping birch tree in the Kalevala epic. In the poem\, Väinämöinen listens to the lament of the birch about how people treat it badly. Band of Weeds\, consisting of Olli Aarni\, Lauri Ainala\, Kalle Hamm and Hermanni Keko\, creates sound art primarily using plants. They convert variation in the electrical conductivity of plants into sounds. Their works have been presented in exhibitions\, and they also perform live together. \nKaris Shearer’s talk is titled “Kalevan Naiset: Reading Epic Poetry in Migrant-Settler Communities in Northern Ontario.” Situating the Kalevan Naiset Ainikin Tupa (Ladies of Kaleva Ainikki Lodge) within the longer history of Finnish-Canadian migrant-settler history in Northern Ontario\, this talk offers preliminary observations about how Finnish-Canadian women used reading\, recitation\, and lay-scholarship of the Kalevala epic poem to sustain cultural memory\, negotiate gender roles\, and articulate belonging amidst shifting ideas about citizenship\, nationalism and multiculturalism in Canada in the 20th century. \nThis event is free and open to all\, and is presented by the AMP Lab and sponsored by the Principal’s Research Chair program at UBC Okanagan. \nAbout the Speakers\nOlli Aarni (born in Oulu\, Finland\, in 1988) is a multidisciplinary artist working with sound\, music\, language\, and literature. His work ranges from sound installations to artist’s books\, and from sound poetry to ambient and noise music. His work covers themes such as perception of time\, the relation between knowledge and senses\, and translating phenomena from auditory to visual and linguistic realms\, and back. The conceptual side of his work is sometimes upfront\, and sometimes hidden and embedded in the pieces. Aarni has collaborated with scientists\, musicians\, visual artists and poets. Everything he does has to do with sound in some way or another\, whether it be in printed\, visualized form or verbally described. A major part of Aarni’s work takes the form of audio recordings. He has released over 20 records on four continents with record labels such as Students of Decay\, Flau\, Dauw\, Ultraääni\, Mappa\, Mondoj\, and Superpang. He has performed live in numerous European countries and in Japan. He has made solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions\, including the Helsinki Biennial. He has made works for the Finnish National Broadcasting Company YLE\, radio art festivals\, and poetry events. \nKaris Shearer is a 4th-generation Finnish-Canadian and scholar of literary audio\, poetry\, and print culture in Canada. She has published extensively on women’s labour in literary communities and\, together with Deanna Fong\, is the co-editor of Wanting Everything: The Collected Works of Finnish-Canadian writer Gladys Hindmarch. For eight years\, she has been the lead UBCO researcher on the SSHRC-funded SpokenWeb Project and has co-authored The Data Primer with Marjorie Mitchell\, Felicity Tayler\, et al. With Emily Christina Murphy\, she has co-authored numerous articles on digital humanities labs and co-edited the most recent issue of Scholarly Editing.

SUMMARY:Dissertation Defence: Material Design and Device Integration for Aqueous Zinc-ion Capacitors
DESCRIPTION:Li Tao\, supervised by Dr. Jian Liu\, will defend their dissertation titled “Material Design and Device Integration for Aqueous Zinc-ion Capacitors” in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering. \nAn abstract for Li Tao’s dissertation is included below. \nExaminations are open to all members of the campus community as well as the general public. This examination will be offered in hybrid format.  Registration is not required to attend in person; however\, please email jian.liu@ubc.ca to receive the Zoom link for this exam. \nAbstract\nAqueous zinc-ion capacitors (AZICs) represent a promising alternative electrochemical energy storage solution to the current lithium-ion batteries (LIBs)\, particularly in fields that require high power and frequent fast charge/discharge cycles\, such as power storage stations. Compared with LIBs\, AZICs offer advantages in safety\, cost\, and environmental sustainability; however\, their practical applications are hindered by limitations such as low-performance cathode materials\, interface instability\, and short-life electrolytes. This thesis developed high-energy and long-life AZICs by innovating and integrating carbon cathodes\, aqueous electrolytes\, and zinc anode modifications. First\, this thesis developed a high-surface-area\, mesopore-rich\, and eco-friendly biomass-derived activated carbon (AC) as a cathode material. Secondly\, a high-mass-loading AC cathode was fabricated to increase energy density and mechanical durability\, and to gain a deep understanding of the relationship between the free-standing cathode fabrication process and its electrochemical performance in AZICs. Thirdly\, to address the instability of the zinc metal anode\, an ultrathin protective coating (ZnPON) was deposited using the plasma-enhanced atomic layer deposition technique to suppress zinc anode dendrite growth and side reactions. Lastly\, urea-modified aqueous electrolytes were formulated to enhance the stability of the electrode/electrolyte interface and extend cycle life. Eventually\, pouch cells (~4 cm width\, ~5 cm length) and commercial-standard AA cylindrical cells (~1.45 cm diameter\, ~5 cm length) were fabricated to demonstrate the potential of integrating research modifications into practical formats. By integrating material synthesis\, electrode fabrication engineering\, and interfacial modifications\, this thesis seeks to narrow the gap between AZICs and practical applications.

Please email jahangir.hossain@ubc.ca to receive the Zoom link for this defence. \nAbstract\nThis thesis studies an alternative method for reward-free offline reinforcement learning\, investigating how well an agent can learn from a fixed dataset when reward guidance is missing\, weak\, or unreliable. A common way to handle this problem is behavior regularization\, where the learned policy is kept close to the behavior policy that generated the dataset. This thesis studies an actor-to-behavior forward-KL version of this idea using the Donsker–Varadhan representation of KL divergence. In contrast to behavior cloning’s behavior-to-actor KL direction\, this actor-to-behavior direction can avoid the action-averaging problem. A reward-augmented alternative is also studied and can be used in settings where reward labeling is meaningful. In controlled settings\, our method can recover KL divergence. However\, its practical performance depends strongly on witness quality\, optimization stability\, and dataset structure. Therefore\, while the method provides a principled framework for reward-free policy optimization\, it does not consistently outperform established benchmark algorithms.

SUMMARY:Sound Lines: an evening of live sound performance
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a live sound performance with AMP Lab visiting artist Olli Aarni\, with David Turner Geraghty\, and an opening set by Yashvardhan Joshi. \nThis event will be hosted by AMP Lab director Karis Shearer at the Alternator Centre for Contemporary Art. It is free and open to all\, and is presented by the AMP Lab\, sponsored by the Principal’s Research Chair program at UBC Okanagan. \nAbout the Performers\nOlli Aarni (born in Oulu\, Finland\, in 1988) is a multidisciplinary artist working with sound\, music\, language\, and literature. His work ranges from sound installations to artist’s books\, and from sound poetry to ambient and noise music. His work covers themes such as perception of time\, the relation between knowledge and senses\, and translating phenomena from auditory to visual and linguistic realms\, and back. The conceptual side of his work is sometimes upfront\, and sometimes hidden and embedded in the pieces.  Aarni has collaborated with scientists\, musicians\, visual artists and poets. Everything he does has to do with sound in some way or another\, whether it be in printed\, visualized form or verbally described. A major part of Aarni’s work takes the form of audio recordings. He has released over 20 records on four continents with record labels such as Students of Decay\, Flau\, Dauw\, Ultraääni\, Mappa\, Mondoj\, and Superpang. He has performed live in numerous European countries and in Japan. He has made solo exhibitions and participated in group exhibitions\, including the Helsinki Biennial. He has made works for the Finnish National Broadcasting Company YLE\, radio art festivals\, and poetry events. \nDavid Turner Geraghty is a Canadian/British sound artist from British Columbia. He uses guitar\, synthesizer\, field recordings and homemade devices to create abstract pieces inspired by musique concrète\, minimalism and drone music. He has performed live in the UK and Canada\, but rarely over the last fifteen years\, and released very little of his extensive archive of recordings. He loves old music hardware and pop songs that use the Yamaha DX7 electric piano preset\, and in his spare time likes to learn Yiddish and play bass while his daughter practices the drums. In a previous musical life\, he earned £5.32 in royalties from radio play on the BBC. He never cashed the cheque. \nYashvardhan Joshi is a multidisciplinary artist from Almora\, India. His work approaches a praxis that addresses computational phenomenology and embodied interaction\, viewing these systems not merely as tools\, but as extensions of human cognition that redefine the relationship between performer\, viewer\, and medium. He works primarily in the field of sound design and an interdisciplinary art practice\, often employing a range of tools (Touchdesigner\, Supercollider and PureData. His collaborative work with Dr Miles Thorogood has been published in a peer-reviewed electrical engineering journal\, “Closed Form Continuous Time Neural Networks for Audio Packet Loss Concealment\,” IEEE Access (2025) and has held three collaborative and solo sound exhibitions in the ArtWalk utilizing the Soundwalk art infrastructure\, a photography exhibition at the NEST at UBC Vancouver\, the AMP Lab Press & Play exhibition and a guest presentation at TouchDesigner’s Vancouver conference.

SUMMARY:When Views Disagree: Conflict-Aware Evidential Inference for Multi-View Mammography
DESCRIPTION:About the Talk\n\nMulti-view mammography uses multiple imaging perspectives to support breast cancer detection\, but variations in image quality and anatomical coverage can lead to conflicting diagnostic evidence. In this talk\, PhD candidate Rayhan Ahmed will present the Conflict–Evidential Inference Network (CEI-Net)\, a novel framework that treats each mammography view as a source of uncertain evidence and explicitly reasons about disagreement between views. By incorporating calibrated uncertainty into the decision-making process\, CEI-Net improves both the reliability and interpretability of breast cancer assessment. The approach has demonstrated strong performance on leading mammography benchmarks and offers new insights into building trustworthy AI systems for clinical screening. \nAbout the Speaker\nMd Rayhan Ahmed is a PhD candidate in Computer Science at UBC whose research focuses on trustworthy medical AI\, including uncertainty-aware and conflict-aware deep learning for medical image analysis. His interests include medical image segmentation\, anomaly detection\, model calibration\, interpretability and explainable clinical AI.
