Frontier Caravans: Protest Performativity and the Making of Transnational Political Subjects

February 17, 2023 at 4:00 pm - 5:15 pm

The Department of History and Sociology invites the public to attend Frontier Caravans: Protest Performativity and the Making of Transnational Political Subjects, a lecture from Dr. Martha Balaguera Cuervo.

Dr. Martha Balaguera Cuervo is an Assistant Professor of Political Science at the University of Toronto. Her research interests center on borders, migrations, transnational feminisms, critical carceral studies and collective political struggles in violent contexts.

In her talk, she will discuss her first book which offers an ethnographic account of migrant encounters with civil society’s sanctuary practices across what she calls the “integral frontier,” spanning Central America, Mexico and the United States.

She examines how networks of legal accompaniment and refugees, including trans individuals, are shaping international asylum law and contesting the detention-deportation regime at the US-Mexico border. She will also discuss her current methodological project titled, “Trans epistemologies: trauma-informed research with gender-variant participants.”

This is a free event that is open to all community members. No registration is required.
