How to Get Grant Money in the Humanities and Social Sciences

February 7, 2022 at 9:00 am - 10:00 am

Join us for this virtual talk with Dr. Raphael Folsom as part of the Practical Matters Public Humanities Series.

Graduate students and junior faculty are often surprised by the amount of time they spend asking for money to fund their research.  Yet few universities offer detailed guidance on how to apply for funding, or how the selection process works. This talk will demystify all the above and offer concrete advice on how to get money for your research.

Dr. Folsom is a historian of colonial Mexico, focusing on Native peoples and borderlands.  After finishing his doctoral studies at Yale University, he began teaching at the University of Oklahoma, where he is now Associate Professor of History, and Director of Graduate Studies in History. His First book, The Yaquis and the Empire: Violence, Spanish Imperial Power and Native Resilience in Colonial Mexico (Yale UP, 2014), won three nationally competitive prizes. Dr. Folsom has two scholarly books underway dealing with Mexican history: a textbook called Frontiers of Mexican History: A New History of Mexico from Earliest Times, which is under contract with Oxford, and Mestizo Empire: A New History of the Chichimeca War, 1550-1600. He is also the author of How to Get Grant Money in the Humanities and Social Sciences (Yale University Press, 2018).
