Indian Braves Film Screening
November 8, 2023 at 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm
FreeIndigenous Programs & Services is hosting a screening of the Indian Braves documentary on National Indigenous Veterans’ Day. There will be a brief opportunity for discussion following the film and popcorn and refreshments will be provided.
As Indigenous Veterans Day and Remembrance Day approach, it is important to acknowledge the contributions of Indigenous Veterans to the Canadian Military in WWI and WWII. There have been many who gave up their rights as Indigenous people in order to join the Canadian Armed Forces and fight for the rights and beliefs that Canadians continue to hold today. Despite not being considered Canadian citizens until 1960, many Indigenous people volunteered to fight on behalf of Canada.
It is estimated that there were over 4000 First Nation soldiers enlisted during World War I and possibly another 2000 who were Metis or Inuit. During World War II, it is believed that there were approximately 3,090 Indigenous soldiers in the Military.
