The 2024 Public Anthropology Speaker Series enters its third year with dynamic presentations by local and international speakers.

Hear medical anthropologist Professor Rebecca Lester (Washington University, St. Louis, USA) share her knowledge on the theme of Beyond the Ivory Tower: Communicating Research to the Real World. This talk draws upon Prof. Lester’s experiences as a public scholar to offer some concrete guidance for how to make anthropological research digestible and compelling outside the ivory tower.

February 26 from 5 to 6 pm

Also participating in the speaker series is Professor John Wagner (UBC Okanagan) who will speak about Rivers and their Publics: Reflections on 25 Years of Public Anthropology. In his talk, Prof. Wagner will describe his ongoing research with river communities in Canada, the U.S., and Papua New Guinea, and reflect on the challenges and outcomes of that research in relation to the most pressing environmental issues of our times, the future of anthropology, and the role of the university in public life.

March 18 from 5 to 6 pm

All presentations are virtual on Zoom Webinar, and everyone is welcome.

The series is organized by the Collaborative and Experimental Ethnography lab, with support from the Anthropology Caucus in the Department of Community, Culture, and Global Studies.
