Tech Talk 6: Tamagotchi: Migrating Fading Cancon from VHS Or In Praise of Poor Images

February 28, 2023 at 12:00 pm - 1:00 pm

Join us in the AMP Lab (FIP 251) for this Tech Talk presented by Cultural Studies students. In the 1990s, a technological fad erupted from Japan called Tamagotchi that were digital toy/virtual pets that children were asked to tend to with their inevitable digital ‘death’ hardwired. Drawing inspiration from this phenomenon, students in CULT 401: Digital Afterlives, who migrated clips from old Canadian films on VHS tapes onto digital mp4 format to explore the practice and politics involved in ‘conservation’ of such poor and vanishing images (Steyerl).

This talk will address the question: Can digital save VHS in the age of digital abundance?

The Tech Talks Series is a lunch hour, casual presentation and conversation about digital tools and digital humanities focused research, organized by the AMP Lab.
