First Day of Class: Faculty Panel

August 28 at 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm

Teacher engaging with students in a classroom

What would you like students to take away from your first meeting with them? Beyond introducing the syllabus, the first day of class is an opportunity to connect with students, invite engagement, and generate excitement around your course. Students will expect to hear about course logistics, materials, and assignments, but they would also appreciate insights into how you plan on guiding their learning and how the course connects to their backgrounds and interests. In this panel + Q&A session, faculty from across campus will share their strategies around four principles for planning an impactful first day:

  • sparking curiosity
  • fostering community
  • activating learning, and
  • exploring expectations.

This panel is part of the Centre for Teaching and Learning (CTL) Back to Teaching Bootcamp. Search for other sessions in this series that might be of interest to you.
