Better Breakouts: Tips & Techniques for Increasing Interaction in Zoom Sessions

August 20 at 10:00 am - 11:00 am

In this participatory online session, you will be able to experience some simple, effective techniques for Zoom sessions to increase student motivation, engagement, and interaction.

Facilitators: Alwyn Spies, Associate Professor of Teaching—Languages and World Literatures, World Literatures and Ana Cortés, Global Studies M.A. student

Alwyn has designed a system of graded in-class assignments that uses Canvas, Zoom breakout rooms, and Google Slides simultaneously for mandatory online synchronous sessions. She will outline and map this system, let you try it out as a participant, and then workshop how you might be able to adapt or adjust it for use in your courses/meetings.rt

Ana has been both a student and an instructor using this system: she was the GTA in a large, partially asynchronous course, and an auditing student in a smaller, fully synchronous course. She will share her perspectives and experiences with you, and give tips and suggestions for how to troubleshoot, and to help students navigate efficiently.
