Classroom Wellbeing & Accessibility Awards

The Classroom Wellbeing and Accessibility Awards is a chance for students to celebrate faculty and staff who have helped improve their overall wellbeing! This student‑led award ceremony, supported by Campus Wellness and the Disability Resource Centre, celebrates efforts that enhance wellbeing and accessibility in learning environments and experiences. Some of the awards being presented include the ‘Dr. Claire Budgen Golden Apple Award’ and the ‘I am Accessible Award.
Nominations
Students can nominate a faculty or staff member who has positively impacted their wellbeing and academic journey at UBCO. Whether they have gone above and beyond to support student wellbeing and/or have developed innovative approaches to ensuring student accessibility, we want to hear about those who have made a positive impact on your experience this year!

Awards and nomination criteria
The Dr. Claire Budgen Golden Apple Award was created to show appreciation towards faculty members who have made outstanding contributions to wellbeing in the academic environment. Award categories are based on the resource Teaching Practices that Promote Wellbeing:
- Creating a safe classroom environment
- Openly discuss wellbeing-related topics
- Recognize that students have lives outside of academics
- Fostering instructor-student relationships
- Fostering peer-to-peer relationships
- Helping students find value in the subject matter
- Helping students find value in the learning process
- Supporting learning outside the classroom
- Structuring courses effectively
- Delivering courses effectively
The I Am Accessible Award acknowledges and celebrates UBCO faculty and staff who exemplify the qualities of an inclusive educational institution. View the Award Criteria.
- Presented to a faculty member who epitomized inclusive education by demonstrating equitable access to learning materials and resources used in the classroom/lab, a positive attitude towards diverse learning needs, and a willingness to be flexible while maintaining academic standards.
- Presented to a staff member who was exceptional in making students feel welcomed and included at UBCO.
