EEGS Seminar Series
March 14 at 11:00 am - 12:00 pm

The Irving K. Barber Faculty of Science presents the “Is Global Deforestation Inevitable? Observations from Tropical Forests in Southeast Asia and Africa.” seminar, as part of the Earth, Environmental and Geographic Sciences (EEGS) Seminar Series.
About the talk
Trends of deforestation in tropical forests are rising halfway through the UN Decade for Ecosystem Restoration despite millions of dollars of funding for tree planting and improved national government regulations against illegal harvest. I’ve worked in community-based forestry and conservation in Indonesia, Madagascar, and the Congo Basin over the last 12 years, and will discuss the reasons behind declining forested area in these highly biodiverse ecosystems. While local economics and demographics certainly play in a role in these countries, the global marketplace may be the driving force responsible for the increase in deforestation. I’ll also present and defend my opinion that COP meetings and international commitments are contributing to, rather than solving the problem.
