Exploring Different Writing Tools: Introduction to LaTex

January 13, 2026 at 10:00 am - 11:30 am

Free

If you’re a graduate student or postdoc who spends significant time writing or editing text, then it is highly likely you’ve encountered & struggled with the limitations of traditional word processors like Microsoft Word or Google Docs. This workshop will focus on introducing LaTeX, a professional typesetting system that allows you to focus on content while automatically handling your formatting requirements. We’ll cover what LaTeX is and how it differs from more common writing tools by exploring its advantages for various writing tasks and breaking down the basic components of a LaTeX document. There will also be an optional hands-on segment where participants can create their first simple LaTeX document (e.g. CV/resume, journal article, thesis, teaching materials) using online tools.

This workshop is part of the Research Excellence Workshop Leader Initiative (REWLI). Learn more and see the full list of offerings.
