Exploring the cancer care workforces’ capacity to implement exercise counselling and an exercise referral pathway: a mixed methods study

November 29, 2022 at 10:00 am - 11:00 am

Exercise is recognized as safe and beneficial for cancer patients throughout the cancer continuum. However, little is known about the capacity of the existing cancer care workforce (e.g., medical, radiation oncologists, cancer care nurses and allied health professionals) to promote and integrate exercise advice and referral as part of usual care. This research explored the cancer care workforces’ capacity to provide exercise advice, promote the uptake and maintenance of regular physical exercise, and identify opportunities to integrate cancer-specific exercise recommendations into usual care. Based on this formative evaluation phase, exercise strategies and resources for clinician-initiated exercise counselling and referral were co-designed and tested with a number of cancer care clinicians at a local cancer centre in Sydney, Australia. Findings and key learning from this project will be presented and discussed.
