IBPOC Community Care Beading Space
August 9 at 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm
If you are a UBCO faculty, staff or postdoctoral scholar who identifies as Indigenous, Black, and/or Person of Colour, or as a member of another racialized group, join us for a community care beading space!
This is an opportunity to showcase and celebrate the beautiful and diverse beading traditions that exist within our collective community as well as connect and strengthen our community with other IBPOC-identifying faculty and staff. This is meant to be a space to ground ourselves in culture, community and crafting. It is a time to connect with our colleagues, find reprieve and express ourselves through creativity.
The event will be led by Keyara Brody, a Sḵwx̱wú7mesh beader and UBC graduate student. We welcome you to bring beadwork from your culture to share and craft with the group. If you’re new to beading, don’t worry, we will have an instruction portion of the event walking folks through how to do a brick stitch. Beading materials as well as snacks and refreshments will be provided. However, we welcome you to bring any beading materials of your own that you would like to use.
This is a space for UBCO faculty, staff and postdoctoral fellows who identify as Indigenous, Black, Person of Colour and/or racialized community members to build their support networks. To learn more about why people who identify as IBPOC need their own spaces, read this article by Kelsey Blackwell.
We thank you for understanding and supporting this community initiative.
