UBC’s Relationship with the Host Nation using the Indigenous Atlas

May 7 at 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

UBCs relationship with host nation using Indigenous Atlas and Large map on floor

The Okanagan Nation’s history with UBC dates back to the inception of this campus in 2005. Naim Cardinal from Indigenous Programs and Services (IPS) will lead participants on an interactive journey to highlight key historical moments and understand our evolving relationship with the Okanagan Nation Alliance while exploring the Canadian Geographic Indigenous Atlas.

During the 90-minute session, participants will be given time to explore the atlas to further their learning about the traditional territories of Indigenous Peoples as well as historical events as they view the timeline. Guided by Indigenous perspectives, ways of knowing, and ways of being about relationships and relationality, this workshop will utilize the Canadian Geographic Indigenous Atlas to help locate ourselves in place and territory.

What is the Canadian Geographic Indigenous Atlas?

An enormous, 25-by-35-foot, Indigenous territorial map of what we call Canada will be utilized as part of this session in the Ballroom (UNC 200) for participants to further their learning about the traditional territories of Indigenous Peoples and relevant historical events.

The  Canadian Geographic Indigenous Peoples of Canada Atlas “re-maps” and “de-maps” (Indigenous Peoples Atlas of Canada, 2023) colonial versions of traditional Indigenous territories to decolonize maps and mapping, providing an opportunity to view the geography of what we call Canada from the perspectives of Indigenous Peoples.
