Academic Integrity and Assessment in the Era of Generative AI (Panel)

The launch of ChatGPT opened the gate to easily accessible generative AI tools by the general public, which in turn raised questions and concerns about how students might use them for their coursework. The presenters will offer approaches to academic integrity and considerations for assessment in ways that focus on learning and resonate with students. Examples and resources specific to teaching at UBC Okanagan will be highlighted. The session will include a Q&A.
Kirsten Bennett is Senior Manager, Strategic Projects in the Office of the Provost and Vice President Academic and works to support Academic Integrity initiatives across campus as part of a multi-unit implementation group and in collaboration with the Academic Integrity Hub at UBC Vancouver. Kirsten completed her undergraduate studies (BA) in History and International Development Studies at Dalhousie University and holds a master’s degree in education from the University of Calgary.
Anita Chaudhuri is an assistant professor of teaching in the Faculty of Creative and Critical Studies at UBC’s Okanagan Campus. Her research in the areas of identity construction of language learners and their development in writing and communication has been published in academic journals such as TESOL Quarterly, BC TEAL Journal, and Writing & Pedagogy. She is UBCO’s faculty advisor on academic integrity and supports the development of an educative approach in this area.
Ramon Lawrence is a professor of computer science and Academic Director of the Centre for Teaching and Learning. His teaching recognitions include the UBC award for teaching excellence and innovation in 2017, the Killam teaching prize in 2020, and a 9-time member of the teaching honor roll recognizing the top 10% of instructors at UBCO. His pedagogical research is in the area of automatic assessment systems and has resulted in several production systems and multiple publications.
