Labour After Socialism: A Comparative Perspective

February 7, 2020 at 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm

Free

Workers and trade unions have followed very different trajectories since the end of the Cold War and collapse of state socialism. Dr. Evans will compare the militancy of Kazakhstan’s oil workers with the relative quiescence of Russia’s, while Dr. Hartshorn will contrast the rank-and-file versus elite split that has emerged among unionists in Tunisia with the federation-to-federation split observed in Egypt. Manfred Elfstrom of the Economics, Philosophy, and Political Science Department will then moderate a discussion of what these diverse experiences tell us about protest, democracy, and marketization.
